EPX welcomes Clean Water Action as February GM presenter

Brady Russell of Clean Water Action will present at the February 1, 2010 EPX General Membership meeting. Please join us at our new GM meeting location… the Cafeteria of Saints John Neumann & Maria Goretti High School 11th & Moore streets!

Brady Russell works with Clean Water Action. He will speak about the City of Philadelphia’s groundbreaking efforts to manage our cities growing problems with stormwater using more green space and tree cover. These approaches will both reduce flooding and sewer backups as well as protecting the health of the Delaware River. Clean Water Action has also been deeply involved in the city’s recycling program and can update EPX members on the latest developments in Philadelphia’s strategy to increase recycling.

Clean Water Action is an organization of 1.2 million members working to empower people to take action to protect America’s waters, build healthy communities and to make democracy work for all of us. For 36 years Clean Water Action has succeeded in winning some of the nation’s most important environmental protections through grassroots organizing, expert policy research and political advocacy focused on holding elected officials accountable to the public.

EPX Town Watch & Greater Phila Cares Winter Coat Drive

The Greater Philadelphia region is a cold place to be during the winter, especially if you do not have a warm coat.
Be part of the Greater Philadelphia Cares 14th Annual Winter Coat Drive.

Last year over 130 businesses, civic groups and individuals collected 6000 new and gently used coats that were distributed throughout the region.

Every year, thousands of men, women, and children in the Greater Philadelphia region live through the cold winter season without a coat to keep warm. You may help provide them with this basic necessity. This event is a reminder that there are thousands of people whose only holiday wish is a warm coat for their children, parents, or themselves.

There are two ways area residents may help:

  • Bring your new or “gently used” winter coat(s) to the December 21st or the January 18th Public Safety/Town Watch meeting held at the EPX office 1940 S. 13th Street or  January 4th EPX General Membership meeting held in Neumann-Goretti High School’s Cafeteria!
  • Drop off your new or “gently used” winter coat(s) at any of our public collection sites from November 1, 2009 through January 19, 2010.

All collected coats may be delivered to our generous project partner, St. Vincent DePaul.

Any donations of 10 coats or more must be delivered to the central St. Vincent DePaul warehouse at 901 East Luzerne Street, Philadelphia, 19124.

EPX helps neighbors recycle used Christmas trees

EPX and a few other South Philly civics are joining forces to sponsor a neighborhood Christmas Tree-recycling event on Saturday, January 9. You can bring your tree (stripped of its lovely decorations & ornaments) to Columbus Square Park (13th & Reed) from 10am – 4pm where it will be turned into woods chips that will be used in public parks & gardens. The cost is only $5 and this earth-friendly act will surely get you onto Santa’s Nice list for 2010!

While the City will pick up trees that are left on the curb on your regular trash night, these trees will not be recycled and will be instead sent to the landfill with other garbage. If you are unable to attend our local Tree recycling event at Columbus Square Park, you may also bring your tree for recycling to the Streets Department’s Citizen Drop-Off Center at 3033 S. 63rd Street from January 9-16 from 8 am – 6 pm, Monday through Saturday. For more info, visit www.phila.gov/streets/ChristmasTrees.html or call 3-1-1.
