Adult tickets are only $20 and children 10 and under are free. Admission will get you samples of each 10 competing sauces, as well as a full serving of the gravy of your choice over macaroni cooked by Mama Maria herself, as well as vegan meatballs from Triangle Tavern. You will also get complimentary bread from New York Bakery, salad, beverages, cold-brew coffee from Rival Brothers, and a homemade dessert buffet. Those who are 21+ get a sample from Chaddsford Winery with additional glasses and bottles available for purchase.
It’s finally back! The very popular EPX Red Gravy Cook-Off is now accepting entrants for the 2020 competition. You could be one of ten contestants to compete for the chance of taking home one of two prizes – Crowd Favorite or Judge’s Choice.
Taking place Sunday, April 19, 2020, from 4-6pm at Ss. Neumann and Goretti High School 1736 S 10th St, this event is a chance for residents to celebrate the heritage and traditions of the neighborhood. Be part of the action by entering to submit your homemade gravy to be judged and enjoyed by all.
To enter, you will need to prepare approximately 3 gallons of homemade sauce that is either vegetarian, meat, or seafood, as well as indicate any allergens, and deliver your submission on the day of. If you are interested in competing with a homemade gravy please register here.
We also need neighbors who are willing to donate to our dessert table. If you are interested in providing a donation of a small-bite dessert, either homemade or store-bought please commit via this form.

Thanks to your generous donations we were able to raise over $1,000 and purchase gifts for teens to be distributed by United Communities Southeast Philadelphia. Thank you as well to the fifteen volunteers who showed up to wrap the gifts! You all made a real impact in our community. EPX is a non-profit 501c3 charitable organization, and you can donate at any time to our general fund.
If you are interested in helping EPX, we are looking for volunteers to work our upcoming Saturday January 4th Treecycling event at Capitolo. Note the new location as Columbus is under construction. If you are bringing a tree to be shredded, there is a suggested donation of $5. More information about the event can be found on the Facebook event.
Zoning meetings are moving to a new date – from now on meetings will be held on the second Monday of the month, still at 7pm in the great room at the East Passyunk Community Center. The next meeting will be Monday January 13th. There will be a presentation to provide an overall update on the BOK building and to discuss future projects, including: Auditorium Renovation, Events Space – Cafeteria 6th Floor, Girls Gym, and 6/7 Floors. We highly encourage you to attend to both learn more about the current plans, and to ask any questions / voice any concerns you may have.

This holiday season EPX is partnering with United Communities to raise funds and collect donations for a toy drive for local South Philadelphia children. This #givingTuesday please support EPX’s charitable drive to raise money and accept donations of new toys for kids 0-18. Although toys of all age ranges will be gratefully appreciated, older children are often overlooked in holiday toy drives, and teens are much more aware of what they have or do not compared to their peers than an infant or toddler. Consider donating a teen-specific gift to our drive, or a monetary donation to allow us to buy age-appropriate and appreciated gifts for kids in our neighborhood.
We are collecting new gifts and toys at the East Passyunk Crossing Civic center, located at 1025 Mifflin. Some suggested items include:
- Sports equipment: basketballs, soccer balls, baseballs and gloves, footballs, tennis rackets, tennis balls
- Art supplies: Colored pencils, paint, brushes, sketch pads
- Games: board games, card games, collectable cards
- Journals: a blank journal or one with daily prompts
- Movie passes and gift cards
- Jewelry and purses
- Beauty items: make-up, lotion, nail polish, perfume
- Hats and scarves
There are more ways to contribute! Join us on Saturday December 14th from 10:30am-1pm for a wrapping party at the East Passyunk Community Center, 1025 Mifflin St. We will be wrapping and labeling contents of the donated and purchased gifts for easy distribution of United Communities to our neighbors in need.

PHILADELPHIA – The Streets Department’s 2019 Philly Leaf Recycling Program begins on Tuesday, November 12 and runs through Saturday, December 21. The program is one of several services provided by the Streets Department to honor the City’s on-going commitment to recycling by helping to reduce the amount of materials that reach the waste stream.
Bagged leaf drop-off will be offered city-wide on Saturdays (except for November 16th and 30th) at 13 designated locations from 9 AM to 3 PM for the duration of the program.
Mechanical leaf collection will be provided as a supplement in areas known to have a heavy accumulation of leaves. The mechanical leaf collection operation will include leaf blowers, mechanical sweepers, and leaf loaders. Mechanical leaf collection crews will concentrate their efforts in designated boundaries each week, following a strategic schedule to maximize efficiency and productivity.
Follow these tips for bagged leaf collection:
- Bagged leaves will only be accepted in biodegradable paper bags. These bags can be processed for recycling along with the leaves. This reduces contamination in the recycling process.
- Do not mix trash or other recyclable materials with bagged leaves. This contaminates leaves and makes them unfit for recycling purposes.
- Use as many bags as needed, maximum 40 lbs. each.
- Bags may be purchased at most hardware stores. Bags are not provided by the Streets Department.
- Bagged leaves may also be taken to any of the Sanitation Convenience Centers:

Northeast Philadelphia State Road and Ashburner Street

Leaves set out curbside, either in bags or containers, will be collected as trash, not recycling.
Follow these tips for mechanical leaf collection:
- To find out when your block is scheduled for mechanical collection
- View schedule.
- Visit http://alpha.property.phila.gov/ to input an address.
- Check your neighborhood newspaper
- All leaves should be raked and ready for collection by 7:00 AM the day of mechanical collection. Rake leaves into the street by the curb’s edge (piling is not necessary).
- If possible, move your vehicle to an off-street parking location on your scheduled collection day, so crews can remove leaves along the curb line.
- Residents in mechanical areas can also drop off bagged leaves.
- Mechanical collection crews will visit routes only once. Residents are urged to sweep and bag any remaining leaves and set out for collection on trash day or take to any bagged drop-off locations or Sanitation Convenience Center.
There will be no collection of leaves on City holidays. During this six-week program, leaves will be collected for composting purposes, like, fertilizing gardens and nourishing trees. For more information, residents can visit http://www.philadelphiastreets.com/leaves or call 311.
