Yes, neighbors it’s hard to believe that your civic association is turning two! Thursday September 11th will see the second anniversary of the corporate founding of EPX and to mark the occasion we will be having a combined celebration! Join together with fellow EPX-ers at Le Virtu Restaurante 1927 E. Passyunk Ave. (www.levirtu.com) for a casual evening of “wining and dining” on the patio, under the stars starting at 7: 00 p.m. – the cover charge will be $20.00 per person. Plan to reserve or buy your tickets at the September 8th General Membership meeting.

BUT, before you wander over to the party, stop by the EPX Corporate office grand opening! The bungalow at 1940 S. 13th street has passed through some minor zoning variance and some major renovations and will open to the public in conjunction with our anniversary. Pop by to check out the renovations, see the art-work and greenery, and the space where most EPX committee meetings will be held and our records will be kept. Senator Fumo should be on hand, with other local dignitaries, to “cut the ribbon” at 6:30 p.m. Come sample some free punch and Italian cookies. So, even if you can’t make the party, stop by for the opening. All are welcomed – EXCELSIOR!

Neighborhood children learned filmmaking techniques through a program sponsored by the East Passyunk Crossing Civic Association (EPX) on August 22nd. Janine Spruil of Lil’ Filmmakers, together with Florence Mickens of the Big Bang Film Festival, explained the basics of how films are made to an enthusiastic group of youngsters at the South Philadelphia Branch of the Free Library at Broad and Morris Streets.

The children tried out camera and microphone techniques, and practiced working the slate. The aspiring movie buffs developed and performed improv scenes, and generally enjoyed their “exposure” to film production. South Philadelphia Branch Librarian Laurie Zambrano assisted by promoting the workshop, registering the children and providing administrative oversight.

The children’s filmmaking workshop, part of EPX’s educational component, was held in conjunction with EPX STORIES, a community film festival designed to feature the people and places that make East Passyunk Crossing unique. The next segment of the project will take place at the South Philadelphia Older Adult Center on September 9th when EPX seniors can tell their stories and be the featured “stars” of the video recordings (more information to be posted soon).

EPX is thrilled to say our July ‘Meet and Greet’ will be held at Paradiso Restaurant and Wine Bar (1627 East Passyunk Avenue) Thursday July 17th in their upstairs banquet room! EPX returns to this spacious property which has been renovated into a casually-elegant restaurant that features an open-air kitchen with a fresh approach to regional Italian & Mediterranean cooking. Owner Lynn Marie Rinaldi has been a friend, and generous supporter, of EPX since our inception and we are so happy to be welcomed back! This second summer event, sponsored by our membership committee, begins at 7:00 PM. The $10.00 cover includes a lovely array of appetizers and there will be a cash bar. Also, feel free to check out their full menu and wine list at www.paradisophilly.com! (Joseph F. Marino)

Everyone is welcome. Please feel free to pass this onto any of your neighbors, friends, and family that may be interested in attending.
