New Hotline Helps Families Find Free Summer Meals for Children

From Councilman Squilla:

Dear Friends:

As many of you know, summer can be a tough time for families with children in Philadelphia. During the school year, tens of thousands of low-income students rely on free or reduced-price meals at school. But when school is out, many of these children face higher risks of hunger and malnutrition during the summer months.

No child should go hungry in Philadelphia this summer. There are over 1,000 places—recreation centers, churches, community organizations, parks—that offer free meals to kids and teens.
Summer meals are free to kids 18 and under. There is no registration or ID required, and there are no income requirements in most areas of the city.

• To find a summer meals site near you:
Call the Philly Summer Meals Hotline: 1-855-252-MEAL, a free hotline operated by the Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger
• Text “MealPA” to 877877
• Visit www.hungercoalition.org.

Please share this valuable information with families in your community. Together, we can ensure our children get the nutritious food they need, so they can stay healthy all summer long.

Sincerely,

Mark F. Squilla
Councilman First District
