Block Captain Meeting Highlights

An Initial Meeting of the Association’s Block Captain Committee occurred on 8/14/2006 at the home of Maura Sostack. More than a dozen attended with many more sending their regrets on not being able to attend, yet want to be involved and kept informed of the Committee’s work.

The committee appointed acting chair Maura Sostack the interim chair of the block captain committee by acclamation. She will serve until an official Board of Directors is elected.

There was a lively discussion and exchange of ideas of what constitutes the duties of a Block Captain. Some Duties of Block Captains may include some or all of the following:

  1. Organize block parties
  2. Serve as a “Welcome Wagon” to new residents within the boundaries of the civic association
  3. Be part of clean and green, or beautification activities
  4. Assist people on their blocks with special needs: elderly, physically challenged
  5. Be the civic association’s “Ambassador” between the association and the neighborhood.

There was discussion that the Civic Association would at some point form a “Communication” Committee and that block captains would come under this committee. The Communications Committee would be made up of the association’s electronic means of communication: website, listserv, online newsletters and online flyers and the Block Captains would be the in-person, face-to-face, door-to-door means of communicating with the neighborhood.

The group decided that the Block Captains would not be part of Town Watch.

The group agreed that they would start talking with their neighbors and try to recruit others to join and become block captains.

Tim Lidiak agreed to plot the blocks of current block captains on his map so we can see where to target others to get involved. Tim agreed to bring his map both the Town Watch and Clean and Green Kick-Off meetings.

The group also agreed that anyone that lives within the boundaries of the civic association may post a question, make a comment or announcement to the entire civic association’s listserv and that there should be no censoring of this type of communication.

Respectfully submitted,
Maura Sostack
